Counsellor
Canadian Muslim Counselling
Calgary, Alberta
Walaa is interested in supporting the positive growth of the Ummah, which she believes begins at the awareness and implementation of strong emotional and mental skills, as is the prophetic example. Walaa is passionate about supporting the revival of Islamic healing traditions and Islamic psychology. Her interests are also embedded within the topics related to women in Islam, marital and familial counselling, anti-racism and anti-islamophobia. Walaa enjoys working with youth, couples, and families. She utilizes a warm approach to her work with clients, which embodies the characteristics of being non-judgemental and genuine. As a Canadian born Muslim-Arab woman, Walaa feels strongly about supporting fellow Muslims in navigating their cultural/religious/career identities as she is continually (re)navigating these areas herself. This includes discussions around the purpose and meaning of life, the roles we take on within our families and communities, as well as the challenges that come with being a visible minority in various spaces.
Walaa has worked extensively as a youth program leader as well as a counsellor in both elementary and high schools. She has also volunteered with multiple mosques and Muslim organizations, such as Nisa Homes, that are committed to supporting vulnerable muslim populations such as women and children experiencing domestic violence. Overall, Walaa enjoys working on initiatives within the Muslim community, which includes leading mental health talks and youth halaqas, and being a support for individuals and families in any way she can.
