A Complete Guide to Access Therapy With Insurance in Canada

Figuring out whether your insurance covers therapy can feel more complicated than the therapy itself. It's easy to put off getting support simply because understanding coverage can feel like a barrier.
This guide breaks down how insurance coverage for therapy actually works in Canada, what your plan may cover, and how to check your benefits in a few simple steps, and how Ruh Care makes the process easier if you're looking for a licensed Muslim therapist who understands your faith and culture as much as your mental health.
What Is "Coverage" For Therapy in Canada?
In Canada, there's no single national network of approved therapists. Instead, two things decide whether your sessions are covered:
- Your therapist's professional designation. Most Canadian extended health plans only cover regulated providers, such as a Registered Psychotherapist (RP), Registered Social Worker (RSW), Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC), or Psychologist. Some plans recognize all of these designations; others only recognize one or two. See sample insurance benefits below.
- Whether that therapist can bill your insurer directly. This is called direct billing. Ruh submits the claim on your behalf through a claims platform, and you only pay the portion your plan doesn't cover. If direct billing isn't set up for your specific insurer or therapist, you pay for the session upfront and submit a claim to your insurer for reimbursement yourself, using the session receipt (often called a superbill or statement).

At Ruh Care, a lot of our therapists are registered on Canada's major direct billing platforms, so we can usually tell you quickly whether direct billing is available for your plan.

What Your Insurance May Cover, and How to Verify It
Coverage for therapy varies a lot from plan to plan, even within the same insurance company. Generally, extended health plans with mental health benefits may cover:
- Individual counselling or psychotherapy sessions
- Virtual/online sessions (most plans now treat these the same as in-person)
- Couples or family counselling (common but not for every plan, so it's worth double-checking)
What usually differs between plans:
- The annual maximum you can claim for mental health services (could be an amount like $500, $1000, $3000)
- Rules and limits to your coverage, including a standard limit per session and percentage covered (e.g., if your plan doesn’t cover 100% of the session cost, you pay the remaining balance)
- Which provider designations are eligible (e.g., psychotherapist, counsellor, social worker, psychologist)
How to verify your coverage:
- Log into your insurer's member portal, or check the benefits booklet from your employer or school.
- Look for a line item under "Psychologist," "Social Worker," "Counsellor", "Occupational Therapist", "Psychotherapist," or "Counselling Therapist."
- Call the number on the back of your benefits card if anything is unclear.
- Or skip the guesswork. Send our Client Care Team a screenshot of your policy or benefits document, and we'll confirm exactly which of our therapists you're covered for.
If you're not sure whether you even have coverage, start with your school's wellness office or your workplace's HR department. They can confirm whether you're enrolled in a plan and send you the details.
Seeking Islamically Aligned Therapy at Ruh Using Your Insurance Coverage
Ruh Care connects you with licensed Muslim therapists across Canada who specialize in mental health care and understand the cultural and spiritual context you bring into the session. It’s important that you work with a therapist who gets you and cares for your wellbeing both in this world and the next.
Here's how insurance fits into the process once you're ready to get matched:
- Fill out our matching form and let us know your insurance provider, or share a photo of your insurance card (front and back) or benefits document.
- Our Client Care Team verifies your benefits and lets you know which therapists would be covered under your insurance, and whether direct billing is available.
- Book your first session with your matched therapist.
- We take care of the billing. If your insurer supports direct billing, we submit the claim for you. You're then only charged for any portion that your plan doesn't cover. If it's covered at 100%, you don’t have to pay anything out of pocket. If direct billing isn't available for your plan or therapist, we'll send you a superbill after each session so that you can submit a claim yourself.
If you don't have insurance, or your coverage doesn't stretch far enough, ask us about our financial assistance program. Your financial situation shouldn't be what stands between you and support.
FAQs
Do you accept my insurance? It depends on your specific plan, not just your insurance company. Share your provider with us and we'll confirm what's covered.
I'm not sure if I have coverage. What should I do? Check with your school's wellness office or your workplace's HR department first. They can tell you whether you're enrolled in a benefits plan and how to access your policy details.
I have insurance through my school. What do you need from me? Let us know your school and your student status, whether it is full-time or part-time, undergraduate or graduate. Coverage often depends on these details.
I live outside Canada. Can I still use my insurance? All of our therapists are based in North America, and insurance plans from other countries typically don't cover their services. Out-of-pocket payment is usually your best option in this case.
Will I have to pay anything out of pocket? Possibly. If your plan doesn't cover 100% of the session cost, you'll pay the remaining balance. We'll let you know what that amount is before you start, so you won’t have any surprises down the road.
Is online therapy covered by insurance? Yes, unless your plan specifically states otherwise. Plans that cover in-person therapy usually cover virtual sessions too, but it's worth confirming with your insurer directly if you'd like to be a 100% sure.
How long does it take to verify my coverage? Once we have your policy details, our Client Care Team typically gets back to you within a few hours or a day.
What should I do if I don't have health insurance or have used up all of my coverage? In that case, you'd be eligible to apply to our financial assistance program, and if approved, you can have the sessions at a much reduced cost.
